Terms to avoid

Stigmatizing views of people with substance use disorders are common. With such harsh views from society, many people believe that coming forward will only open them up to criticism. Stereotyping people with substance use disorders can lead others to feel pity, fear and anger. Also, it can lead to a desire for social distance from people with substance use disorder among others. Additionally, stigmatizing language can also negatively influence health care providers' perceptions and attitudes. One should be careful with the use of language. It is advised to avoid certain terms to reduce stigma and negative bias when discussing substance use disorders.
